The shelter-in-place order makes it challenging to celebrate a child’s birthday – in-person parties are on hold.

However, earlier this month, McHugh Construction and the development team for condominium building 1000M worked quickly to make the event special for one of the building’s neighbors — 7-year-old Sawyer Morgenthaler, who keeps a close eye on the site’s construction activity from his balcony.

After Sawyer’s mom sent a message to the developer on Instagram about her son’s birthday and his keen interest in construction, the McHugh and 1000M teams quickly got to work to make Sawyer’s birthday special, including making a 12-foot-tall Happy Birthday Sawyer banner to hang from a nearby building within eyesight of Sawyer, and giving him a customized hard hat.

Neighbors came out on their balconies and construction workers paused to raise balloons to Sawyer while singing happy birthday to him.

“The owner contacted us about Sawyer’s birthday, and we stepped up and made it special,” said Michael Meagher, president of McHugh Construction. “It was great to bring some joy to this little boy’s quarantined birthday.”

Designed by Helmut Jahn, 1000M will be a 74-story residential condominium tower at 1000 South Michigan Ave. McHugh Construction is the general contractor, and the building is being developed by a joint venture of JK Equities, Time Equities and Oak Capitals.
