IBEW Local 134 has started converting the former Drake School into its new union hall

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 134 has started work on its project to convert the former Drake Elementary School building at 2722 S. Martin Luther King Blvd. into its new union hall.

The Chicago building permit has a $16,114,331 value.

The project includes interior and exterior renovations, including a one story addition and associated site work.

Lyons Electric Ltd. is the project’s electrical contractor, while the general contractor is Wright Construction Services, Inc. Other trades include: Masonry, Cyberdyne Masonry Corp.; plumbing, C.R. Leonard Plumbing and Heating; and refrigeration and ventilation, National Heat & Power Corp.

In late 2015 as the union local was considering acquiring the school property, DNAInfo reported that business manager Donald Finn said the “school looks like the perfect fit for us.”

He said then at a community meeting at Dunbar Vocational High School that the union would convert the existing Drake school building to use as its union hall and would also house the union’s credit union and trust fund in the building.

He said the union would also like to partner with neighboring Dunbar, 3000 S. King Dr., and would guarantee a job after high school for every student who graduates from the electrical program, a partnership similar to what the union offers at Simeon Career Academy.
