$9,615,953 permit issued for UChicago university lab building

The City of Chicago has issued a $9,615,953 building permit for a 20,700 gross sq. ft. University of Chicago research building.

The permit issued on Oct. 20 for the site at 5602 S. Maryland Ave. describes the project as a single-storey high bay building with mechanical mezzanine. “Proposed use: Open plan research laboratory for developing large scale scientific instruments. Includes bridge crane, auxiliary office space below mezzanine.”

The project’s general contractor is Klein Construction Ltd.  The building permit’s architect associates with Gil Ruben, founder and principal of Architrave.

Key subtrades listed on the permit include:  Electrical – Taylor Electric Company; masonry – Colvin Masonry, Inc. and Hugh Henry Construction; plumber-plumbingD.A.M. Plumbing Inc.; and refrigeration and mechanical – McCauley Mech.

Editor’s note: UChicago said in a statement on Oct. 28 that “The concrete subcontractor is Gallagher Construction not Hugh Henry Construction.” The university also advised Chicago Construction News that the building permit value should be $9,615,953, not $96,159,530 as recorded by the City of Chicago building permit database.
