Logan Square residents have received with joy the new proposed LGBTQ-friendly affordable housing complex at 2031 N. Milwaukee Ave.

The complex, to be named The John Pennycuff Memorial Apartments at Robert Castillo Plaza, will be financed through the use of TIF funds from the existing Milwaukee-Fullerton Tax Increment Finance (TIF) district, as well as Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) funds, tax credits and private funding.

CSA Partners, Ltd. proposes to deliver 88 units in the seven-story mid-rise at the corner of Milwaukee and Campbell avenues on the neighborhood’s southern end.

“I’m pleased to see more affordable housing replace what’s leaving the neighborhood, especially the demise of the older properties,” DNAInfo reported resident Vicky Schmidt as saying. She has lived in the neighborhood since 1991.

“I moved here because it was one of the most economically and ethnically diverse neighborhoods in the city, and I want to see it stay that way,” she said.

The housing would be a mix of reasonably priced units restricted to households earning up to 60 percent of the area median income and public housing units — all marketed toward the LGBTQ community. Of the 88 units, 28 would be studios, 48 would be one-bedroom units and 12 would be two-bedroom units.
