Mayor Rahm Emanuel was joined by city leaders and development partners at the Pennycuff Memorial Apartments groundbreaking ceremony recently.

Ground has been broken for the John Pennycuff Memorial Apartments, an LGBTQ-friendly affordable housing complex.

The seven-storey project, at 2031-33 N. Milwaukee Ave., will bring 41 affordable housing units and 47 CHA project-based units to the Milwaukee Avenue corridor. All  units will be marketed toward the LGBTQ community, according to Block Club Chicago.

The building will have 88 housing units along with 2,500 square feet of retail space.

Pennycuff, who died in 2012, was a member of the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame and served on the Chicago Commission on Human Relations Advisory Council.
