CISCO to honor individuals, projects with Pride in Construction Awards

Chicago’s Construction Industry Service Corporation (CISCO) will recognize projects and individuals with Pride in Construction Awards at its annual meeting on Jan. 29.

The organization, which works to strengthen the unionized construction market in the area, will honor:

Educator of the Year –Professor Robert Bruno, University of Illinois, School of Labor & Employment Relations and the Director of the Labor Education Program in Chicago.

Prof. Bruno’s research focuses mainly on the working-class, and the study of union issues. He states in the faculty and staff section of the university’s website that he became a professor because “he believes that it is the best way for him to operate on behalf of working-class men and women.”

Public Body of the Year The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) of Greater Chicago.

President Mariyana Spyropoulos will accept the award for the MWRD. “In addition to MWRD’s Wet Weather Treatment Facility in Lemont which is one of this year’s winning Projects of the Year, the MWRD also has plans to construct a reservoir in McCook, a reclamation plant for phosphorous recovery in Stickney and a disinfection facility in Skokie,” CISCO says in its award notice. She was elected as MWRD’s board president in January, 2015.

Labor Advocate of the Year – Jorge Ramirez, president, Chicago Federation of Labor (CFL); a vice-president of the national American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO).

“The CFL is the third largest central labor council of the national AFLCIO, representing half a million working people across Chicago and Cook County,” CISCO says.”The son of Mexican immigrants, Jorge has served as an officer of the CFL since July 2006 and was elected the CFL’s first Latino president in July 2010.”
