It is a “grand daddy” building permit — at $200 million it is certainly one of the largest issued by the City of Chicago — but the permit reflects only a portion of the $500 million expected cost for the major Willis Tower renovation at 233 S. Wacker.

The most recent permit issued on Oct. 4 follows an earlier $50 million foundation permit issued in August.

The permit says: “Renovation of lower levels (LL), LL1, LL2 and LL3 and upper levels (L) L1, L2, and L3. Scope to also include a new three-story addition to base of the building at L1, L2, and L3 with interior build-out.”

Turner Construction Company is the project’s general contractor and the architect is Gensler. Subtrades listed on the building permit file include: Electrical, Gurtz Electric Company (replacing Prime Electric Co. in the original permit); masonryCerami Construction Co. Ltd.; plumbingDoherty Mechanical, Inc.; and refrigeration and ventilation, Admiral Heating Vent.
